2020 was a difficult year for all of us, and 2021 continues to present its challenges. For example, according to The Associated Press, the nation’s largest grant maker had a banner year in 2020 with donations up 24%. So deep were the hardships caused by the pandemic that even a record high in contributions fell well short of the need.
In 2021 the Bishop’s Annual Appeal will have similar challenges as we try to help those in need. There are six key areas of the Annual Appeal: Seminarians, Catholic Life, Catholic Charities, Ministry Support, Christian Education and Communications, and all of these areas of care are important to us and to our faith.
Catholic Charities: Because of your generosity in 2020, Catholic Charities in Eastern Carolina helped over 58,000 individuals in need. Catholic Charities provided help with disaster services, family crisis support, and critically needed food pantries. Last year they distributed over 3 million pounds of food in Eastern Carolina, some of which went to our neighbors. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has created even more need. Many struggle to put food on the table, and this will continue well into 2021. Your donation helps support families in their time of need.
Seminarians and Vocations: We are all aware of the shortage of priests in the Catholic community, and we know it all too well here at St. Therese. There are currently 20 men studying for the priesthood in the Diocese. Funds from the Bishop’s Annual Appeal provide them with much needed support for tuition, room and board, and their books. With our critical need for priests, compounded by our loss of Father Trent, your contribution provides funds for their journey. Your donation would be a wonderful way to honor Father Trent and his contributions to all of us at St. Therese.
Christian Education: Many of us, our children, or grand children have been blessed with a Catholic education. Our youth have prepared for the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. The campus ministries provide religious support for those in college, like UNCW. Your generosity helps maintain and build on the religious education of our youth. Your donation helps strengthen their connection with their Catholic faith, shaping them for the future.
Marriage, family and respect life: The Appeal supports programs that foster our Catholic lives, including marriage preparation, marriage support, promoting a culture of life and dignity for all, natural family planning, post-abortion healing, and prison ministry. This touches so many lives within the Diocese and here locally.

Ministry Support: This area provides for hospital ministry, such as Fr. Greg, to support and comfort to our parishioners who are hospitalized, along with financial support for small rural parishes, training to ensure a safe environment for our youth, and the formation of permanent deacons, like Deacon Keenan.
Communications: The Diocese shares stories of faith and the message of God’s love and salvation with bilingual media programming, NC Catholics magazine, social media, video, and the dioceseofraleigh.org website. Each element is a key connection point for all parishioners to deepen our Catholic faith.
We have a good start and after two weeks have met 38% of our goal. Thank you for your participation! Let’s keep the momentum going!
